After making a delicious stir-fry or gumbo, complement your culinary masterpiece with perfectly prepared white rice. Cooking rice is easy if you follow a few precise steps. If you add too much water, the rice may be mushy and sticky. Without enough water, the rice may end up undercooked and hard. By following a few simple directions, you can create fluffy rice in a matter of minutes.
Pour the desired amount of rice and water into a heavy saucepan. Use 1 3/4 cups of water for every cup of rice.
Add butter and salt to taste. For each cup of rice, 1/4 tsp. of salt works well. Stir the rice mixture gently with a wooden spoon.
Turn the heating element to high and bring the water and rice mixture to a boil.
Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Simmer the rice for 15 to 18 minutes, or until all of the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
Take the pot off of the heat and allow the rice to rest for five minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
