Easy Steps to Cook Rice

After making a delicious stir-fry or gumbo, complement your culinary masterpiece with perfectly prepared white rice. Cooking rice is easy if you follow a few precise steps. If you add too much water, the rice may be mushy and sticky. Without enough water, the rice may end up undercooked and hard. By following a few simple directions, you can create fluffy rice in a matter of minutes.

Step 1

Pour the desired amount of rice and water into a heavy saucepan. Use 1 3/4 cups of water for every cup of rice.

Step 2

Add butter and salt to taste. For each cup of rice, 1/4 tsp. of salt works well. Stir the rice mixture gently with a wooden spoon.

Step 3

Turn the heating element to high and bring the water and rice mixture to a boil.

Step 4

Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid. Simmer the rice for 15 to 18 minutes, or until all of the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.

Step 5

Take the pot off of the heat and allow the rice to rest for five minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

  • Heavy saucepan with a tight-fitting lid
  • Butter and salt to taste (optional)
  • Wooden spoon
  • Fork

Tips

  • Don't lift the lid during the cooking process, which will allow steam to escape.
  • Add a bit more water if you prefer stickier rice, and a bit less for firmer rice.
