Just about any side dish that belongs at a barbecue or picnic also goes well with pulled pork. Salad, grilled vegetables, fresh fruit and a light dessert are perfect items to add to the menu. Put a twist on these dishes to create your own menu by adding unusual spices and flavors.
Salad is a light and crispy side dish that pairs well with pulled pork. Coleslaw salad is a standard choice for a pulled pork menu, and it's easy to make by adding prepared coleslaw dressing to a mix of shredded cabbage, carrots and red onion. Add pineapple, mango or apple for a sweet twist. Potato or macaroni salad also pairs well with pork, as does a cucumber, broccoli or bean salad. Green salad with creamy dressing is a simple side and can be spiced up by adding avocado, zucchini squash or chopped nuts. Different types of lettuce and greens mixed together can also add interest to a garden salad.
Grilled vegetables are a perfect companion for pulled pork. Corn on the cob grills well. Bell pepper, onion, mushrooms and zucchini squash can be skewered and grilled. Other vegetables, like asparagus, eggplant, potatoes and even radishes can be wrapped in aluminum foil and placed on the grill. Steamed vegetables are nutritious and go well with pork. Carrots with honey, broccoli, green beans and peas are great choices for steaming. Baked beans, while not a fresh vegetable, also make a perfect side dish with pulled pork.
Fresh fruit adds a sweet flavor as well as being cool and refreshing. Watermelon is a perfect side dish for pulled pork. Cantaloupe and honeydew are good choices too, as well as a melon salad with chunks of all three melons mixed together. For a simple fruit side dish, serve sliced oranges, apples or peaches. Mix with ranch dressing and walnuts or pecans for a simple Waldorf treatment. Berries, such as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries, also pair well with pulled pork.
Light summery desserts go well with pulled pork. Ice cream sundaes or half a cantaloupe filled with vanilla ice cream are a great way to top off a pulled pork meal. Angel food cake with berries and whipped cream, grilled peaches, pineapple upside-down cake and berry cobbler are also delicious choices.
